【研究成果】Infants recognize rapid images, just like adults（7-8か月児でも成人同様の高速物体認知が可能）

心理学研究室の河原純一郎教授と中央大学の研究グループは、乳児も成人と同じような素早さで物体認知ができる情報処理システムを発達させていることを明らかにしました。通常、成人は2つのものを区別して認識するときは、0.5秒以上間隔を空けないと、2つめのものを見落とすことが分かっています。今回の研究では、言語習得前の1歳未満の乳児であっても成人と変わらない認識結果であったことから、成人と同様のスピードで物体を認識し、記憶できていることがわかりました。

Professor Kawahara (the Psychology Laboratory) and a research group at Chuo University have revealed that infants have the same short-term visual information processing system as adults. Adults could recognize two visual objects when these two were temporally separated over half a second, but adults overlook the second object when the temporal separation is less than 500 ms. In the present research, the team found that even infants less than one-year old demonstrated a similar pattern of the results as adults, suggesting that infants develop visual recognition system capable of encoding two items into working memory by 800 ms but not 200 ms.
