Supporter System
This is a system to support foreign students who come to Japan for the first time to smoothly start life, study and research after they arrive in Sapporo. Japanese students and foreign students who are already enrolled in the graduate school of Humanities and Human Sciences play the role of supporters. The Students Affairs Section will introduce you the best supporter.
The main items that can receive support are as follows.
- Procedure in ward office
- Procedure at post office, bank
- Providing life information
- Apartment search, apartment contract procedure assistance
Tutor System
This is a system aimed at improving the effects of learning and research of foreign students. International graduate students, research students and undergraduate students can apply this academic support system if their supervisors approves. Support for natural Japanese language expressions is very popular with foreign students. The Students Affairs Section will arrange a suitable tutor close your field of study.
Program for proofreading of academic papers in Japanese
This program aims to enhance the expressiveness of Japanese in the dissertation written by foreign students and to enhance research activities. In addition to thesis, it is used for manuscripts presented at academic conferences and articles submitted to academic journals.

Japanese Government Scholarships
The Japanese Government (MEXT: Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, or “Monbukagakusho”) offers scholarships you can apply for before arriving in Japan.
Hokkaido University Scholarships
Hokkaido University President’s Fellowship
This scholarship is for prospective international students enrolling in Master’s, Professional, or Doctoral Degree programs. Applicant must be a current student or alumnus of a university which concluded an “Inter-University Exchange Agreement” and a “Memorandum of Understanding on Student Exchange” with Hokkaido University. Students who are already enrolled at Hokkaido University cannot apply for this scholarship.
Hokkaido University Special Grant Program for Self-Supported International Students
Hokkaido University Special Grant Program for Self-Supported International Students is for prospective international students seeking doctoral degrees. Applicants are eligible to apply to become research assistants and have their tuition fees waived.
Private Scholarships
JICA, JASSO (Japan Student Service Organization), The Konosuke Matsushita Memorial Foundation, and others are available.
