It was when I wondered how I could teach natural Japanese to non-native speakers that I started to take interest in research on the Japanese accent.

Research on the Japanese accent is not only one of the most flourishing areas of linguistics in Japan but also a unique one. Since the Japanese accent is different in nature than that of English, German and French, distinctive research has been conducted by the Japanese.

The world of accent research is fascinating—from the process of the history of accent research, which started from phonetics and eventually introduced the idea of phonology as distinct from phonetics, to the methods of accent research from various linguistic perspectives such as structuralism and generative phonology.

I have focused my research on the accents of Korean dialects through field surveys as well as that of Middle Korean through literature and documents while studying Japanese accent theory.

I warmly welcome anyone interested in the phonetics and phonology of Korean and Japanese as well as in comparative research on Japanese and Korean. Please feel free to visit my laboratory.
